Last night, I started watching the final bunch of episodes for SG-1 season 3. Had a good time with "Shades of Grey." Then, I got to "New Ground," and something kept nagging at me. Oh, it was technically a good enough episode, but that something kept nagging.

Then, I had a realization. "New Ground" is, effectively, an episode right out of the classic Doctor Who series. Think about it:

The team lands on a planet where two factions are busy fighting one another for idealogical reasons that really aren't worth it. The team is then separated, with the majority being captured by millitary who think they're spies for the other side, while the remaining uncaptured team member goes 'underground.' Attempts at reasoning go nowhere fast, and here there be many conspiracies.

Ok, to be fair, the exploratory episodes of SG-1 (as opposed to the more millitary ones) function on the same principle as DW in general. Just replace 'Stargate' with 'TARDIS'. Nonetheless, I *really* felt it in this episode. If someone had only thought to put a scarf on Daniel, I would have died right there.

(I admit, I haven't finished watching yet, as it was late and I was tired. If I change my mind about anything by the end of this episode, I'll edit the entry accordingly.)

"Androids" was a lot of fun. It helped a great deal that many of the scenes were set outside and thus looked more natural (no pun intended, really), and that the Cheesy Sci-Fi was kept to a minimum, in favor of the human story. I *have* heard that the story in question is strongly based on "The Prisoner of Zenda," but having never seen it, I can't really comment. All in all a fun story, and I loved the fact that Romana got *herself* out of trouble, rather than having the Doctor rescue her all the time. I'd be a lot less fine with her constantly getting kidnapped, if this weren't the case. Plus dude. Swordfight. Duuude. (Moving right along. Please ignore Lily's personal kinks.)

"The Power of Kroll," on the other hand, did good things for my insomnia. I'm good with human history parallels (Daleks=Nazis, of course), but when it's obvious and moralistic...oi. Plus the boredom factor. Oooh, the big squid ate more people. It would help if I cared about the people what got et. Pretty good looking giant squid, though. I will also say that I liked Romana being all pragmatic, in the face of the Doctor's phillosophy. "That's great, but I'd rather not die at all." <3

Episode Review, in disorganized bullet points, as per usual )

In conclusion, that's fifty minutes of my life I'll never get back. Which, considering the cheesy moral at the end, is just plain ironic. You know what's scary? I think this was actually worse than Day One. My standards have officially been reset.

On the plus side, the MST value was quite high. It's all in how you watch the episode.

Previews: Time travel! I <3 time travel. Besides, it can't be as bad as this episode.
