[livejournal.com profile] livii, you mentioned the idea of of world without the Doctor, as related to AUs. Well, I was looking up "Inferno" on Wikipedia, and look at what I found:

"During the scenes set on the parallel Earth, images (supposedly) of the UK's dictatorial leader are seen on posters. The image used is that of Visual Effects Designer Jack Kine, in homage to the 1954 BBC adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four where the face of Big Brother was Head of Television Design Roy Oxley (Kine had worked on the visual effects for that production).

Fan speculation, carried forward in the comic strips and novelisations, suggest that the dictator may be the parallel version of the Doctor. The Virgin New Adventure Timewyrm: Revelation by Paul Cornell states that the dictator was one of the alternative regenerations the Time Lords offered the Doctor in The War Games."

Book canonicity is its own can of worms, but dude. The irony.

I know, that idea is amazingly weird and awesome. I don't go for it because I do stand by the idea of only one set of Time Lords in all universes (it keeps my head on straight, when all these parallel worlds are out there, and I think that having other versions of the Doctor degrades the concept of our Doctor, as it were). But it's like freaking fascinating to think of it going that way. Especially because...dude, I can see it.

I basically feel the same way. Though I do kind of like the idea that maybe the Doctor (and Romana, and co.) could exist in other universes and just not be Gallifreyan. The personality/soul remains the same, but the person is born human. Something like that was done in Paul Magrs' "Blue Angel," I believe, though being a Magrs book it was a lot weirder than just that.

Oh, deliciously awesome, yes. I am going to be turning that over in my mind for the next while, because it pops up so many interesting ideas! They could be any race, really, the personality type replicating across the universe.

Meaty stuff, woo.
